Most of my research are at the intersection of Corpus Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, and Natural Language Processing. I am quite interested in how we express our subjective views and feelings in language use, and in hindsight, most of my work in and after graduate school revolves around this idea. I have done a sociolinguistic study on the impact of interpersonal relationships to the use of parting words in Mandarin and a semantic study on the use of modal verbs in Linguistics journal articles. Thanks to my mentor Prof. Alvin Chen, I have also conducted discourse analysis studies using quantitative, corpus-based approach and explored some topics in text analytics, such as data visualization, sentiment analysis, and building language models using deep learning.
